Aria APE-1 Aria Programmable Multi Effects
in good working condition.
Made in Japan, the APE-1 provides some of the best tones of the 80s. Has nice lush chorus.
From effectsdatabase:
The Aria APE-1 was one of the earliest programmable multi-effects pedals, combining four core effects - compressor, distortion, delay, and chorus - into a single floor unit with true stereo outputs, an effects loop, and the ability to store and instantly recall three effect combinations. Each preset was selectable via footswitch, with a fourth switch for bypass.
Each effect section had independent controls:
-
Compressor: Attack, Sustain
-
Distortion: Distortion, Tone
-
Delay: Time, Feedback, Balance (up to ~200 ms)
-
Chorus: Speed, Depth (LFO range 0.2-3 Hz)
The effect loop could be engaged per-preset, allowing integration of external pedals like EQs or phasers. All switching was electronic, and each effect section had indicator LEDs for real-time status. Output levels were also programmable per-preset, enabling careful volume balancing between patches.
With a rugged steel chassis and a footprint of 13.4" x 7.2", the APE-1 was compact for its time and weighed 5.1 lbs. It required a dedicated 117V/220-240V AC supply and featured stereo outputs for modulation and delay. Signal-to-noise ratio was rated at 60 dB, with 30 dB of compression available.
Though relatively obscure, the APE-1 was forward-thinking - anticipating the functionality of later digital multi-effects - but built entirely with analog signal paths and discrete components.
